GENESIS REVISITED
Sermon by Thomas C. Trinka
May 29, 2010

You know, I remember years ago when I was new in the faith, and I would listen to Mr. Armstrong speak, and quite frequently he would cover the first several chapters in Genesis. And I remember thinking to myself, "well here we go again, back in the garden" I wanted him to talk about the Book of Revelations, and yet God seemed to quite often inspire Mr. Armstrong  to speak about Genesis. What Mr. Armstrong  use to refer too as, the "truck of the tree"

Well here we are some 25 years later, and I have come to the realization, that there is so much information that is hidden in the first several chapters to Genesis. And that just like the Book of Revelation, the more you read it, the more seems to jump out at you.

So today, I thought I would share with all of you, some of my thoughts and insights regarding the opening chapters of the Book of Genesis. And as some of you might know, I am a science buff, so we will touch on some natural science as well, as it relates to the scriptures.

If you wish to title this message, I have labeled it; "Genesis Revisited"      And hopefully, you will see how this title blends into the theme of what I will be talking about today.  So let’s start at the beginning and carefully go through these verses.

GEN.1.1-2 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

As I believe we have come to understand, there is a time gap between Genesis 1.1. and 1.2. For we understand from JOB 38.7 that the angels shouted for joy when the earth was originally created, presumably because of the shear beauty of God’s original creation.

And we know from various scriptures that the earth was originally the abode for at least one third of the angels. However, satan not being satisfied with those arrangements took matters into his own hands and along with a third of the angels rebelled against God’s sovereign authority.

So there was war in heaven, and satan was cast down to the earth, and the angels under his charge, were also cast down with him. Jesus Christ speaking of this event, stated that He saw satan fall like lighting from heaven. Just think of a bolt of lightning in your minds eye, think how fast and with what power and force it streaks across the sky.

When we read of war in heaven, we might think of a real battle or struggle for supremacy, however this was clearly not the case. What Jesus was telling us is that, in a instant, with unimaginable force satan and the demons were forcibly thrust back down to the earth.

Although satan is a very powerful adversary in relation to humanity, he is absolutely insignificant in comparison to our loving Creator. And we can take great comfort in that fact. And if we turn to 1 John chapter 4, we find this truism confirmed.

1 JOHN 4.4 "You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world"

So brethren, we can discern from the imagery of satan being forcibly thrust down to the earth, like a bolt of lightning, that God  who is dwelling within us, is of a vast magnitude greater, then the spirit that is in this present evil world.

OK let’s turn back to GEN.1.2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

As I have covered in a previous message, these terms without form and void, might  be more literally translated as a "formless waste" The Theological Wordbook, states the combined meaning of these two Hebrew words as meaning "absolutely nothing whatsoever" The key to fully understanding what God is trying to convey to us here, is found in the definition of the word earth. Good bible study, we know involves letting the bible interpret itself. So, if we drop down to verse 10, we find the biblical definition of the word earth, which is used here in verse 2.

GEN.1.10  And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good. God defines the dry land as the earth. So by applying this definition, then to verse 2, we find that at that point, after satan’s rebellion, that there was an original universal flood. And therefore there was no dry land whatsoever. The dry land was completed destroyed, being completely covered by water, and therefore the dry land became a formless waste.

And as I have covered before, this explains the existence of the creation of petroleum, which literally means "rock oil" which is a combination of the Greek word petra meaning rock and the Latin word oleum, which means oil.

Oil or petroleum is only found in one category or type of rock formation, which is sedimentary rock. And sedimentary rock as the name implies was formed from sediment, laid down by a flood. Petroleum is the product of vast amounts of vegetation, that were quickly covered with layers of silt. We can better understand the energy stored in the form of petroleum, by applying the first law of thermodynamics, which simply states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only it’s form can be changed.

In other words, the plants that existed in the primordial forests of the world prior too the original flood, absorbed and then stored the suns radiant energy, or sunlight through the process of photosynthesis. That stored energy in the form of carbon in the plant tissues, then was covered with silt from the flood, and therefore, it did not decay in the normal sense of the word.

It is thought that by being quickly covered with sediments and therefore in an absence of oxygen, the plants were preserved until through geological processes, the sedimentary rock was forced down thousands of feet below the surface, where heat and pressure transformed the ancient vegetation into petroleum over the course of time.

The energy therefore that is derived from petroleum, was originally sunlight collected from prehistoric plants, before the original flood. Think of that, the next time you fuel up your car at the gas station. In fact, the vast majority of all life on earth, with a few exceptions [the exception of some bacteria and sea life found living in the deep sea vents], derive there sustaining physical energy from sunlight. No matter what kind of food we eat, the source of the life giving energy can ultimately be traced back to sunlight.

And there is a spiritual lesson for us here also. Jesus Christ is the true light of the world, and He is also the true bread of life, so we are both physically and spiritually sustained through and by Him.

And although there is much twisting of fact to conform with Darwin’s theory of evolution. Interestingly, though not surprising, sedimentary rock is also the type of rock that contains the fossil record. The fossil record has been laid down in successive layers over the course of time. The initial layer begins within specific strata of sedimentary rock that has been termed the "Cambrian Explosion"

Let me quote several references pertaining to this event.

STEPHEN J. GOULD, HARVARD, "The Cambrian Explosion occurred in a geological moment, and we have reason to think that all major anatomical designs may have made their evolutionary appearance at that time. All major divisions of life, arose within the Cambrian Explosion. Contrary to Darwin's expectation that new data would reveal gradualistic continuity with slow and steady expansion, all major discoveries of the past century have only heightened the massiveness and geological abruptness of this formative event..." Nature, Vol.377, 26 10/95, p.682

RICHARD Monastersky, Earth Science Ed., Science News, "The remarkably complex forms of animals we see today suddenly appeared. ...This moment, right at the start of the Earth's Cambrian Period...marks the evolutionary explosion that filled the seas with the earth's first complex creatures. ...‘This is Genesis material,’ gushed one researcher. ...demonstrates that the large animal phyla of today were present already in the early Cambrian and that they were as distinct from each other as they are today.

Richard Dawkins, Cambridge, "And we find many of them already in an advanced state of evolution, the very first time they appear. It is as though they were just planted there, without any evolutionary history. Needless to say, this appearance of sudden planting has delighted creationists. ...the only alternative explanation of the sudden appearance of so many complex animal types in the Cambrian era is divine creation...", The Blind Watchmaker, 1986, p229-230

So we see that contrary to what is commonly taught in the public schools today. The theory of evolution, is just that, a theory. A theory that is not substantiated, by a reasoned study of the fossil record. And speaking of the fossil record.

At this time, I’d like to quote from a very interesting research paper that I found online some time ago. It was written and published by a George Leopold Cuvier. He was a noted French zoologist and paleontologist.

This particular research paper was published in 1825. So this information predates Darwin’s work by some 34 years. And therefore this information is untainted from modern evolutionary theory. What we are going to see, is that the geological record substantiates the biblical account of 2 universal floods.

It is a very long and detailed paper, so I’m only going to gloss over what I find most relevant for today's message. Breaking into the article; The lowest and most level land areas show us, especially when we dig there to very great depths, nothing but horizontal layers of material more or less varied, which almost all contain innumerable products of the sea. Similar layers, with similar products, form the hills up to quite high elevations. Sometimes the shells are so numerous that they make up the entire mass of soil by themselves.

They occur at elevations higher than the level of all seas, where no sea could be carried today by present causes. Not only are these shells encased in loose sand, but the hardest rocks often encrust them and are penetrated by them throughout. All the parts of the world, both hemispheres, all continents, and all islands of any size provide evidence of the same phenomenon.

Thus, not only have they lived in the sea, but they have been deposited by the sea, which has left them in the places where we find them. Moreover, this sea has remained in these locations, with a sufficient calm and duration to form deposits so regular, so thick, so extensive, and in places so solid, that they are full of the remains of marine animals. The sea basin therefore has provided evidence of at least one change, whether in extent or location.

The traces of upheavals become more impressive when one moves a little higher, when one gets even closer to the foot of the great mountain ranges. There are still plenty of shell layers. We notice them, even thicker and more solid ones. The shells there are just as numerous and just as well preserved. But they are no longer the same species.

Also, the strata which contain them are no longer generally horizontal. They lie slanted, sometimes almost vertically. In contrast to the plains and the low hills, where it was necessary to dig deep to recognize the succession of layers, here we see them on the mountain flank, as we follow the valleys produced by their tearing apart.

And those upright layers which form the crests of secondary mountains do not rest on the horizontal layers of hills which serve as their lower stages. By contrast, they sink under these hills, which rest on the slopes of these slanted strata.

When we bore into the horizontal strata near mountains with slanted layers, we find these slanted layers deep down. Sometimes when the slanted layers are not very high, their summits are even crowned with horizontal strata. ***The slanted layers are therefore older than the horizontal layers.***

Since it is impossible, at least for most of them, not to have been formed horizontally, evidently they have been lifted up again and were in existence before the others which rest on top of them. Thus, before forming these horizontal layers, the sea had formed other strata"

So brethren, what we learn from this unvarnished information, uncorrupted by modern evolutionary science, is that the fossil record points to 2 worldwide floods. And that at some time after the second flood, that is the flood of Noah’s day, there was a vast movement in the topography of the earths crust, thus allowing for the older layers of fossil filled strata to be moved vertically, forming the vast mountain ranges of the world. And in some cases these older strata have moved above the newer layers of strata.

And the bible does in fact mention this event in GEN. 10.25 "To Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided" Now the traditional commentary on this verse, states that this division has to do with God confounding the languages of the people at the tower of Babel, and thus the people were divided is speech and then over time became divided by location.

While it is true that during Peleg’s life, God did confound the languages at the tower of Babel, and thus causing a division in population by and through a language barrier. On closer examination, this does not seem to be the underlying meaning of this verse.  Let’s look at the verse more closely. Genesis 10.25.

The same Hebrew word, for divide is used in Genesis chapter one, where it is used numerous times. God divided the light from darkness, in verse 4, and He divided the waters in verses 6 and 7. and the day and night in verse 14. So an appropriate  synonym for divide in all these verses, would be to separate. God separated the light from the darkness, and so on.

The scripture states that in Peleg’s days the earth was divided. The term translated earth is the same word used in Genesis chapter one. And as we covered, it is defined by God as dry land.

Notice carefully, that Gen.10.25 does not say, that during the days of Peleg, the peoples, tribes and nations were divided. The scripture states that at that time, the earth, that is defined as the dry land was divided. Or we might also say, that the dry land was separated. It is my belief, that when God recreated the world after the original flood, that all the dry land was connected together, and that the Garden of Eden was at the center of the united super continent.

And that the super land mass remained connected together until the time of Peleg. After all, in order for the dry land to be separated, it stands to reason that it had to be all together originally. Now, I base this premise on several things. First of all, the very structure of the continents today point to the fact that all the continents were once connected together, for instance the east coast of South America, would fit quite nicely into the west coast of Africa.

The Scientific community, does not dismiss this fact, in fact they have named the ancient super continent Pangea. They do however, as you know claim that the continental drift happened slowly, over the course of many millions of years. So the fact remains, that at some point in the past, there was one super continent. As I stated before I believe the separation happened, when God said it did, in Genesis 10.

Let’s consider some biblical clues, that I feel support this premise, that the earth, that is defined as the dry land, was before and after Noah’s flood, up until the time of Peleg, all connected together.

First, let’s go back to GEN. 1, and reread verses 9 and 10.     9 Then God said, "Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear"; and it was so.

As I stated before, there is so much information packed into the first couple of chapters in Genesis, but unless we have your spiritual antenna’s up and working, we will just gloss right over what’s here. Notice brethren, that God states that the waters were gathered into "one place" and as a result of that fact the dry land appeared. Now it stands to reason, that if all the waters are gathered together in one place, then all the land must also be gathered together in another place. And in the next verse, God defines this separation of the two.

10 And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

So in one place we have all the dry land, and in the other place all the seas were gathered together. Now this term rendered as seas, seems to imply more that one, since it is plural. As we would say, today, the seven seas. However, again on closer examination, this word seas, is not contradictory, with the previous verse, which states that all the waters were gathered together in one place, on the contrary, it is supportive.

The Kiel and Delitzsch commentary on the OT, states that "this Hebrew word [seas] is an intensive rather that a numerical plural, with the implied meaning of quote- "One great ocean" which therefore surrounds the dry land on all sides. Ok, so these scriptures tell us that before the time of Peleg, that there was one great ocean and one great land mass. Now let’s add to this fact. Let’s explore the thesis that God will again recreate the earth back to that original state.

Consider the fact, that God’s word says in various  scriptures that He will redeem Israel from the 4 corners of the earth. Now if the land is all divided in pieces, as it is today, then how would we define, 4 corners? And how will all the people travel back to Jerusalem? Let’s consider possible answers to these questions. Turn with me please to ISA. 11. ISA. 11.11-12 It shall come to pass in that day That the Lord shall set His hand again the second time To recover the remnant of His people who are left,
From Assyria and Egypt, From Pathros and Cush, From Elam and Shinar, From Hamath and the islands of the sea.      12 He will set up a banner for the nations, And will assemble the outcasts of Israel,   And gather together the dispersed of Judah, From the four corners of the earth.

Now how do you suppose that this remnant of the Israelite nations, that will have endured the Great Tribulation and over 3 years of captivity, how are they going to travel back to Jerusalem from all over the earth. As God says, from the islands of the sea and the 4 corners of the earth?

How are the modern day Israelites that are living say, in Canada and the US, and for that matter Australia going to travel back to Jerusalem? How are they going to travel over the oceans and over the mountains from the 4 corners of the earth?

Maybe hop on a plane or a cruise ship? I don’t think so. There will not be any public transportation at the end of the tribulation period. This will be the greatest time of world war that has ever been on the earth.  Jesus said, that if the days were not limited, no one would remain alive.

Let’s just look at one scripture, that kind of summarizes the horrific state of the world at that time. ISA. 24.1-  1 Behold, the LORD makes the earth empty and makes it waste, Distorts its surface And scatters abroad its inhabitants. And verses 3-6       3 The land shall be entirely emptied and utterly plundered, For the LORD has spoken this word. 4 The earth mourns and fades away, The world languishes and fades away; The haughty people of the earth languish. 5 The earth is also defiled under its inhabitants, Because they have transgressed the laws, Changed the ordinance, Broken the everlasting covenant. 6 Therefore the curse has devoured the earth, And those who dwell in it are desolate. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, And few men are left. And let’s drop down to the last sentence of verse 18 and onward. "And the foundations of the earth are shaken" 19 The earth is violently broken, The earth is split open, The earth is shaken exceedingly. 20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, And shall totter like a hut;  for its transgression shall be heavy upon it,

So considering the utter and complete devastation of the entire world at that time, how is the small remnant of Israel going to travel back to Jerusalem. They will have to walk, won’t they? Well how are they going to cross the oceans and the great mountain ranges?

Well I believe that God is going to make there travels a little easier. turn ahead at few chapters to Isaiah 40. ISA. 40.3-5
3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness: " Prepare the way of the LORD; Make straight in the desert A highway for our God.
4 Every valley shall be exalted And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight And the rough places smooth; 5 The glory of the LORD shall be revealed,
And all flesh shall see it together; For the mouth of the LORD has spoken."

REV. 16.17-20. 17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, "It is done!" 18 And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth. 19 Now the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And great Babylon was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath. 20 Then EVERY island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

The Greek word, translated fled away, means to vanish, or to disappear. So this verse tells us that when God brings His final judgement on Babylon the Great, at the end of the Tribulation period, that God is going to cause all of the Islands and all of the mountains to disappear.

Now, why do you suppose all the mountains will be leveled and all the valleys exalted? And why will God destroy all of the Islands? Brethren their are spiritual lessons we can learn from all of these things. We must understand, that God mirrors spiritual reality with His physical creation. In other words, the physical creation reflects the spiritual conditions of the world, at any given time.

Notice an example of this, ISA. 11.6-9 6 " The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, The leopard shall lie down with the young goat, The calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little child shall lead them.      7 The cow and the bear shall graze; Their young ones shall lie down together; And the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

8 The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole,   And the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den. 9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain,
For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD
As the waters cover the sea.

See Brethren, that in the world tomorrow, God’s Spirit of peace and love, and care and concern for one another,  will replace the spirit that is in this present evil world. A spirit of carnality and corruption, of eat or be eaten, the survival of the fittest.

And this carnal spirit is reflexed in the present creation. That is why in the world to come, the lion will eat straw like the ox, and there will be no more poisonous snakes, and I venture to say no more blood sucking insects. Everything will be restored to the way God originally created it, when God looked at His creation in Genesis chapter one and said it was very good!

Notice these verses in GEN.1.27-30.

27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth." 2
9 And God said, "See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.

God seems to be saying to Adam and Eve, that at that time, before the original sin, that they were to have a diet of fruits, vegetables. No mention of eating any animal flesh, even through God put all lower forms of life under Adams dominion and care. And notice carefully the next verse. 30 Also, to EVERY beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food"; and it was so.

Notice this brethren, no carnivorous animals of any kind. No form of animal life was originally created to eat, or should I say, to live off of, another form of animal life. And God intends that in the world to come, that His creation will be restored to that former state of being, as we read in ISA. 11, when the lion will again eat straw like the ox, just like God originally created them to do.

And we find this principle clearly stated in Acts 3.21, that at the time of Christ’s return there will be a restoration of all things. Let’s look at that verse Acts 3.21 [ Speaking of Jesus Christ] whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began.

Now not just a restoring of some things, but a restoration of ALL things on earth, to the way God originally created them to be, back at the time of Genesis 1, since the present world began. When God looked at His finished creation, and said, it was very good.

So therefore, understanding this then, I believe the reason that there will be no more Islands, as we read of in REV. 16, is a reflection of the fact that mankind will no longer be divided into various competing factions. Just as Israel and Judah will be united again into one nation, so likewise, all mankind will be united in love and concern for each other.

We read of this physical reunion of mankind in ISA. 19.24-25

24 In that day Israel will be one of three with Egypt and Assyria—a blessing in the midst of the land, 25 whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, "Blessed is Egypt My people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance."

So we see here, that former arch enemies will be united together, serving and obeying God with one accord. And that will be accomplished, by the removal of satans influence and the indwelling of God’s Spirit, which will be made available to all humanity at that time. And as we saw, this spirit of brotherly love and cooperation, will be reflected in the disposition of all the animal life on earth at that time as well.

As we just read a little while ago in ISA. 11- God says that "Nothing shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD As the waters cover the sea"

And Brethren, you and I have been selected by God to help bring that wonderful future to reality. We will be the guiding hand to help our Lord and Savior bring that to pass, for the benefit of all mankind. And I believe that this unity will also be reflected in the future topography of the world. Notice verse 24, it states that Israel will be a blessing in the midst of the land. The word translated midst, means inwards parts, often referring to the heart. Strongs refers to it as meaning the center of something. And this word land, is also translated as the earth throughout the OT.

So we could also correctly translate verse 24 as follows-  Israel will be a blessing in the heart or center of the earth. The familiar passages in Isaiah chapter two gives us some more detail on the matter.

ISA. 2.2-4   2 Now it shall come to pass in the latter days    That the mountain of the LORD’s house   Shall be established on the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above the hills;     And all nations shall flow to it.

3 Many people shall come and say,

" Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,

To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways,

And we shall walk in His paths."

For out of Zion shall go forth the law,

And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

4 He shall judge between the nations,

   And rebuke many people;

They shall beat their swords into plowshares,

   And their spears into pruning hooks;

Nation shall not lift up sword against nation,

Neither shall they learn war anymore.

Just as mountains are symbolic of nations in scripture, so we find here that Israel and especially Jerusalem will be exalted above all the other cities and nations. Notice it says in verse 3, that "Many people shall come and say, " Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD" They will travel up to Jerusalem.

And remember we read in REV. 16.20 "That every island fled away, and the mountains were not found" This leveling of the great mountain ranges will not only constitute the removal of physical barriers and thus representing the uniting of all mankind. But moreover, the removal of all the great mountain ranges, also symbolizes the humble and submissive nature that all mankind will develop through the indwelling of God’s Holy Spirit at that time.

This spiritual principle, is also reflected and recorded for us in ISA 2.11-17 11 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled,

The haughtiness of men shall be bowed down,

And the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

12 For the day of the LORD of hosts

Shall come upon everything proud and lofty,

Upon everything lifted up—

And it shall be brought low—

13 Upon all the cedars of Lebanon that are high and lifted up,       And upon all the oaks of Bashan;

14 Upon all the high mountains, And upon all the hills that are lifted up;

And verse 17 17 The loftiness of man shall be bowed down,

And the haughtiness of men shall be brought low;

The LORD alone will be exalted in that day,

Again, we see that the physical creation will mirror the spiritual reality of the people living in the world at that time. The physical reuniting of mankind, in a spirit of brotherly love, will be reflected by the leveling of the mountains, and the elimination of all Islands. Thus symbolizing the fact that there will no longer be barriers and separation between the nations of the world.

There will be instead a unity of mankind, living in peace and harmony as God originally intended. As it states in Acts 3, with the return of Jesus Christ there will be a restoration of all things, to the way God originally intended.

Let’s turn now to  Zephaniah 3.9  " For then I will restore to the peoples a pure language, That they all may call on the name of the LORD, To serve Him with one accord. And verse 10;

From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia, My worshipers,

The daughter of My dispersed ones,  Shall bring My offering.

Commentaries suggest that the phrase " From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia" means that in relation to Jerusalem, peoples from the remotest nations on earth, will come to worship God in truth.

Notice God states in verse 9, that all the people of the world will serve Him in one accord, that is with unity of mind and purpose.
Brethren there will truly be a restoration of all things, one pure language as there was before the Tower of Babel, symbolizing the reuniting of all the nations back together again. Just as the miracle of tongues on the Day of Pentecost, recorded in Acts chapter 2, symbolized the unity of the Church through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

OK, So summarizing what we have just covered. Brethren, I believe that after this mighty earthquake that we read about in REV. 16, with the mountains ranges leveled, and the Islands no more, that God will put the earth, that is all the dry land back together again into one piece, to mirror the unity of the nations, that Gods Spirit and Gods government will bring to pass worldwide.

After all, God is creating one family, the Family of God, which all of us will have a part in bringing to completion. A family that is united together as one, one with God and one with each other, just as the Church is part of one united body, the body of Christ.

And, let’s also, consider the fact that when God tabernacled with the children of Israel in the wilderness, God dwelled with the Israelites in the Holy of Holies. The tabernacle was in the center of the camp, with all of the Israelites camped in a circle around it.

And therefore, since Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday today and forever, it stands to reason, that if all the land was all one piece, before the days of Peleg, that God most probably dwelled in the center of it.

And so likewise, Jerusalem will be the dwelling place of God and His saints. It will be the capital city at the center of a united world. A new Pangea, if you will, where all nations will live in unity and harmony, obedient to God’s universal laws. All the nations will dwell, or we might say be encamped or encircled around God, who will be dwelling in Jerusalem, at the heart or center of that reunited world.

Ok, well I’m getting a little ahead of myself, I want to go back and cover some more material from professor Cuvier’s paper, in relation to the geological record.

The following statements I believe can be ascribed to Noah’s flood, quoting now- "Thus, it cannot be doubted that this first large production of mammals, which we can call from the middle age"

Brethren notice that the professor labels the point in time being referred too, as the middle age. So we have the geological time period before and up to the original flood, then the middle age, which can be defined as the time period between the two floods, that is from Genesis chapter one to the flood of Noah’s day, and then the third phase, from Noah’s flood to the present.

Let me read that part again; "Thus, it cannot be doubted that this first large production of mammals, which we can call from the middle age, are the main ones whose remains have been collected in this earthy deposit, of sands and silt, which covers our large plains everywhere, which fills our caves, and which blocks up the fissures of most of our rocks.

Without doubt they constituted the population of the continents at the time of the great catastrophe which destroyed their races and which prepared the soil on which the animals today subsist.

In fact, wherever we discover the remains of them there are large deposits of marine formations above them, so that the sea has overwhelmed the countries where these races lived and remained on top of them for quite a long time. Then the sea retreated again and opened up an immense surface area for a new population, the one whose remains fill the sandy and fertile silt strata of all the known countries today.

Whatever similarities certain of these species present to those of our time, one cannot deny that the totality of this population had a very different character and that most of the races which made it up were destroyed. Now brethren, before I read this next bit, let me just interject that professor Cuvier primarily conducted his personal research on the continent of Europe, including Russia, and Siberia and also in North America. This paper has no references to any geological digs in the Middle East. Now keep that in mind as I read this next bit of text.

Speaking of Noah’s flood, quote- "What is astonishing is that among all these mammals, there are no human beings. That would surely not be the case if human beings had created settlements in the countries which these animals inhabited"

Brethren, so although geological history records a massive extinction of animal life at the end of this middle period, there were apparently no humans living on the continents of Europe, Northern Asia or North America, at that time. I believe what this information conveys to us, is that before the flood of Noah’s day, the people on earth all dwelled in a concentrated area, around the Middle East and maybe south into northern Africa.

And that is why, as he states no human remains from the pre-flood world have been found in the continents of Europe, northern Asia and North America. And I believe, that is why after the flood, God not only found it necessary to confound the languages, but also to physically divide the land, to separate the continents, as we covered earlier, as is stated in Genesis 10, in order to spread mankind around the globe.

Continuing from the Cuvier paper: The strata nearest the surface, the layers of silt and sand mixed with rounded pebbles from distant places and full of the bony remains of terrestrial animals, in large part unknown or at least strange, seem especially to have covered all the plains, filled the base of all caves, and blocked all cracks in the rocks within their range.

Today these strata form, in the eyes of most geologists, the most obvious proof of the immense inundation which [was the last] of the earth's great catastrophes. So brethren, what we find here, is that their is ample evidence of at least 2 worldwide floods in the geological record. What a shame it is, that this information has been suppressed in western civilization today. Professor Cuvier’s paper goes on to comment on the relationship between the geological record and the record of human history. Let me read, a little bit from that section, which is subtitled;

The History of Peoples Confirms the Newness of the Continents

Although at first glance the traditions of some ancient peoples who trace their origin back so many thousands of years seem forcibly to contradict the newness of the present world, in fact when we examine these traditions a little more closely, it does not take us long to notice that there is nothing historical about them. We are soon convinced, by contrast, that real history and everything which it has preserved for us in the form of reliable documents dealing with the first establishment of nations, confirm what the geological record have announced.

That is, that No chronology of any of our peoples in the West goes back in an unbroken chain more than three thousand years. [ Now remember this was published in 1825, so we can tack on 200 years to all these figures that I will be reading]

Continuing-  For the history of western Asia we have only some contradictory extracts which go back, with little coherence, merely twenty-five centuries. By combining what we collect of the oldest with some historical details, we would hardly extend the figure to forty centuries.

One single people has preserved for us written records from before the time of Cyrus: the Jewish people. The part of the Old Testament called the Books of Moses, has existed in its present form at least since the schism of Jeroboam, because the Samaritans hold to it just as the Jews do. That means that the text is now certainly more than two thousand eight hundred years old.

There is no reason not to attribute the writing of Genesis to Moses himself, a fact which would put it back by five hundred years more, to thirty-three centuries.

And reading the text is sufficient to make one notice that it was composed in part with pieces of previous works. Therefore, we can entertain not the slightest doubt that this is the most ancient writing which our western tradition possesses.

Brethren, what an interesting statement. That the OT is the oldest know book in modern civilization. Continuing... Now, this work and all those which have been created since, however foreign their authors might have been both to Moses and to his people, depict for us the nations on the edges of the Mediterranean as recent.

In addition, they all tell us of a universal catastrophe, an inundation by water, which brought about an almost total rebirth of the human race. For the age of this catastrophe they do not go back a very long time. Thus, I am of the opinion, that if there is something confirmed by geology, [concerning this second great catastrophe] it is that the surface of our world has been the victim of at least 2 great and sudden upheavals, the last of which, whose date cannot go back much beyond five thousand years or so.

And that this revolutionary upheaval pushed down the countries where human beings and the species of animals best known to us today previously used to live and made them disappear. And thus, by contrast, dry land was formed from the bottom of the most recent sea, and from it created the countries now inhabited, and that since this revolution the small number of individuals which it spared have spread out and propagated throughout the territories recently made dry land, and consequently that it is only since this time that our societies have resumed a progressive development, formed institutions, raised monuments, collected facts about nature, and put together scientific systems.

But these countries inhabited today, which the last revolutionary upheaval made dry land, had already been inhabited previously, if not by human beings, at least by terrestrial animals. Consequently, at least one previous revolution had put them under water. [end quote]

Well brethren, I’m sure you will agree with me, that that’s certainly fascinating reading isn’t it. The fact that this information was clearly known some 200 years ago, shows us just how corrupted our modern educational system as become. Recall the movie I shared with most of you some time ago, on Intelligent Design.

And how a certain professor was throughly frustrated by the fact, that he had spent many years in university study, to receive his doctorate, and yet throughout all his years of study, no information contrary to Darwinian evolution was ever even mentioned.

OK, I believe we have spent enough time covering the first 2 verses of Genesis chapter 1. I guess this sermon will have to have multiple parts. So, as I begin to wined this down, let’s just cover a couple of things that have kind of jumped out at me over the last several years.

Let’s reread Gen.2.7-9       7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.      8 The LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed.

I find these 2 verses very interesting. Notice that the Lord God created Adam outside of the garden. Verse 8, may even imply that Adam was alive and watched God create this special garden for Adam.

The wording seems to leave open the possibility, that Adam was created first, and then the garden for him, with Adam present and watching God create it for him.

Let’s reread verse 8,  "The LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden, Notice, and there He put the man whom He had, [Pass tense] formed" Seems like God made Adam first, and then the Garden.

In any event, Adam was created outside of the Garden of Eden and then God put him in it. So there must have been a distinction, between the land outside of the garden from which Adam was formed, and the Garden of Eden itself. A distinction that God wanted Adam to understand.  Otherwise, why wouldn’t God have simply created Adam inside the garden itself?

There was a lesson that God was trying to convey to Adam. That the Garden was a special place, for in fact, it was to be God’s dwelling place, and God wanted to dwell with Adam. That was the original intent. Just as God dwelled with the nation of Israel, and God dwells within all of us, and will someday dwell with mankind in New Jerusalem, which will be 1500 miles cubed. It’s always been God’s desire to dwell with mankind.  God wants to live with His Children.

Continuing in verse 9 - And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Continue down in verses 15-24   15 Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.

So again we see God reaffirming this point, that Adam was created outside of the garden and specifically placed into it.
16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die."

So we see here, that even before Eve has been created, God gave Adam specific instruction, not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, which symbolized the antithesis of the first 3 commandments. God alone was to be Adams Lord. Adam was to desire direction only from God, since God was His Creator.

Notice also something else that just recently jumped out at me. God told Adam that he could freely eat from every tree, except one. God was offering Adam an abundant life, lots of choices. Satan on the contrary, influences mankind by saying that God is holding something back from us. That by obeying God we are missing out on really living life to the full.  And that is the same lie he perpetrated on Eve isn’t it.

GEN. 3.1 Last part- "Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?" Implying to Eve that God is holding back good things from mankind.

But in fact the very opposite is true. As Jesus stated in JOHN 10.10  The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. God offers us every good and perfect gift, and therefore we must learn to fully put our trust in Him.

Just as the little children must learn to listen to there parents and not touch the hot stove or they will get burned. Likewise so we must learn to faithfully follow all of Gods loving instructions, for our own good.

Just as it states in DEUT. 5.33 and elsewhere - That "You shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess"

OK, I’m going to try and wind this down, but there is one other important point that I want to leave you with, so let’s read Gen. 3.1-3 GEN. 3.1-3  Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?" 2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’"

Interesting that verse 3 states that Adam and Eve were not even allowed to touch the fruit of the tree, let alone eat the fruit. I guess the lesson here is that we should not even entertain the thought of sin. And we can tie in James chapter 1, verses 13-15. I’ll just read it to save some time.

13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.      14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

And remember that God instructed Adam not to eat from the tree. So Eve is repeating what Adam apparently told her. That is why it says in scripture that Eve was deceived but Adam sinned. God held Adam personally responsible because God had given him personal instruction.

And so then both Adam and Eve sinned by partaking of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of good and evil.

Verse 7. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

OK.  So let me conclude by asking a question. How long were Adam and Eve living in the garden, before then sinned? I have heard some ministers state in the past that Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden for years, probably for 7 years, before they sinned and were cast out. Is that true? Is there any way of knowing?

Well, although we will not know for sure the exact duration of time that Adam and Eve dwelled in the garden, until the resurrection, when we can personally ask Jesus Christ. I’m going to present an alternative theory to you, based on what the scriptures tell us, and more importantly, what they don’t tell us.

Gen. 3.24 So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life. And continuing in Gen. 4.1-2  Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, "I have acquired a man from the LORD." 2 Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel.

So what we find recorded for us here, is that Cain and Abel were both conceived and born after Adam and Eve were expelled from the garden. Now let me ask you, just what kind of birth control do you think Adam and Eve used, if they had lived together in the garden, for any number of years?

I mean let’s face it, They had no cable TV,  to pass the time. They had no jobs to travel too that would have separated them for any length of time. They had no friends to socialize with, nor even any books to read, did they? All they had were each other, the animals and God in the garden.

So we come to one of three possible conclusions.

1)  Eve had a real bad headache that lasted a very long time.

2)  God had shut up Eves womb for the entire time that they lived in the garden.

Or 3, Adam and Eve did not live in the garden for any extended length of time.

Well let’s consider these options. Regarding option number one. I doubt very much that Eve had a headache that lasted for years. If she did, I feel real sorry for Adam.

Option 2, why would God have shut up Eves womb, after all we read in GEN. 1.28 that "God blessed Adam and Eve after He created them, and personally instructed them to "be fruitful and multiple"

So that leaves us with option number 3, doesn’t it. Adam and Eve must not have lived in the garden for any long duration of time. For had they, Eve most certainly would have conceived and given birth in the Garden. Either that or Adam and Eve would have had personally disobeyed God’s instruction to be fruitful and multiple.

Let’s read GEN. 3.24 and 4.1 again- So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.

GEN. 4.1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, "I have acquired a man from the LORD."

Notice, this verse seems to indicate that Adam and Eve did not get romantically involved until after they were expelled from the garden. Now why would that be?Well let’s pick up the story, immediately after they ate the forbidden fruit, to find a probable solution to this dilemma.

Gen. 3.8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden   "in the cool of the day", and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

Brethren, when is the cool of the day? Most commentaries state that this was in the early evening, when the sun is low on the horizon.      OK, keep this thought in mind, and turn back with me to GEN. 1.27-28

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it.

And verse 31  Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

GEN 2.1-3       1 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. 2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.     3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

Brethren, let we close with the following thoughts and observation.       Do you notice anything peculiar from these last 2 verses?

Consider the fact that God had just created Adam and Eve, on the 6th day.     And Jesus Christ specifically stated that the Sabbath was made for mankind.    So how come the scripture states that God alone, rested on the Sabbath day. Shouldn’t it state that God along with Adam and Eve rested on the Sabbath day?

I mean after all, the Sabbath was made for them. And God specifically repeats the fact in consecutive verses that He alone rested on the Sabbath day. And we know from being students of the bible, that when God repeats something, especially in the same passage, that there is a specific reason for the repetition.

I mean since the Sabbath was made for man, and God had just created man, should not the scripture mention the fact, that Adam and Eve keep the Sabbath together with God, who was dwelling with them in the garden?

Or were they? Why does God mention that He was walking in the garden in the cool of the day? What is the significance of that fact, that it was recorded for us in the scriptures?

I believe that this is a very important question, that we should continually ask ourselves as we study the scriptures. What’s the relevance? After all, all scripture is recorded for our admonition, for reproof, correction and instruction.

Might it be, that God was walking in the garden in the cool of the day at the end of the 6th day of creation, as the Sabbath day drew near? And therefore since Adam and Eve had sinned, they were expelled from the garden, at that time, at the end of the 6th day of creation.

And therefore they did not keep the Sabbath day with their Creator. And that is why the scripture repeats twice in consecutive verses in GEN. 2.2 and 3 that God alone keep the Sabbath day, God was emphasizing the fact that Adam and Eve were not keeping the Sabbath with Him.

And that is why Adam and Eve did not romantically know each other and have children until after they had left the Garden, because of the fact that they were not in the Garden for any length of time at all.

Let me end this thought with one verse from the book of Hebrews, which seems to fit in here, with this subject matter quite nicely. HEB. 3.18  And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey?

This passage as we know refers to Israel’s failure to enter the promised land, which is symbolic of the 1000 year Sabbath rest, with the Kingdom of God again restored on the earth. Did Adam and Eve obey? No, so maybe they also failed to rest, on the original Sabbath day. And that may be one reason why Jesus Christ is called the second Adam, for He will restore the Sabbath rest for all mankind, as God originally intended. Indeed there will be a restoration of all things, and thus Genesis in a sense, will be revisited, by all mankind, by and through Jesus Christ, the second Adam.
